Let's Start with a Story...
I watched a YouTube video the other day and because I am an online marketer, I get all the ads that promote that industry. Sometimes I skip the ads, and other times I watch all the way through to see what people are promoting and how.
Of course, some resonate with me while others do not. Either way, I find it fascinating.
Anyway, this time I couldn’t wait to hit the “Skip Ads” button as some woman was proclaiming that “she had a secret that the experts don’t want you to know.”
I couldn’t watch further even if I wanted to because my eyes had involuntarily rolled back into my head.
Do people still use these tactics?
Apparently, they do.
The point I want to make is that I don’t think there are “gurus” out there conspiring to withhold secrets from you.
I don’t think there are secrets at all when it comes to starting, marketing and growing your beauty business.
Once you get past the overwhelm and the confusion, you will see that there is actually a logical path to do things. And like anything, it all begins with the first step. More on that later…keep reading.
One thing I know to be true (and I’m not the first one to say it) is that there is no one way to market your business. Any marketing tactic will work for someone (even for the YouTube lady), just like every weight loss program has its success stories.
It’s about finding what will work for you. In the most efficient, most affordable way possible. The long way can be painful but the wrong shortcuts can hurt you too.
So how do you figure out what works for you? Ask yourself some key questions:
What lights you up?
What energizes you instead of drains you?
What aligns with your values and what compromises the things that are important to you?
This is essential to figure out if you want to be in business long-term.
Having said that, there are a few fundamental facts that you need to focus on before everything else. These aren't secrets and I'm no "guru." I will forever repeat myself on these things because they are that important.
Let’s talk about one of the most integral pieces of the marketing puzzle.
Who Exactly Are You Marketing To?
Until you know the answer to that question in great detail and depth, your marketing efforts will be diluted and misdirected.
You won’t be able to focus your time and effort on creating amazing content, products and services that are in alignment with what your ideal customer wants if you don’t know who your ideal customer is!
You will just jump from one to another, wasting time and money, throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping it will stick.
You most definitely won’t get the results you want.
Until you can answer the question with absolute clarity, you won’t know what problems your audience is facing and what pain they are trying to avoid.
And then, the good part: what goals they are trying to achieve and WHY.
I worked on this relentlessly for the past year, while building my online business and for many years before that in my brick and mortar businesses.
So I am speaking from experience when I tell you, if you don’t know who you are speaking to, then there won’t be anyone to listen to what you have to say.
There are no secrets really. Get your foundation solid and you will have more success in business AND be happier.
